"Clashes
over the sport of off-roading are becoming more violent for riders, property
owners and law enforcement officers as conflicts about the use of
all-terrain-vehicles (ATVs) escalate, federal officials, landowners and advocacy
groups say. Property owners across the country report that they have been
threatened and their homes vandalized by off-road-vehicle users ... Riders also
are becoming victims ... In 2007, 4.7 million off-highway vehicle users visited
public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), compared with 3.8
million in 2004, the agency reports. At the same time, the U.S. government has
stepped up efforts to restrict ATVs to assigned routes rather than allow them to
ride cross-country." Read the full story by going

BRP Set To Continue Success In 2009 ATV Race Season
The 2009 ATV racing season is already underway and BRP is setting lofty goals
for its Can-AmTM ATV racers and teams for this season. At the top of the list is
championships. Last season, Can-Am racers took home championships in the WORCS,
CMRC Canadian Nationals and the GNCC series. In all, racers claimed five
championships across North America. It should be an exciting season as Can-Am
continues to support ATV racing at both the local and national level. Read more

Off-road enthusiasts to BLM: Keep riding areas open
"Ed Tobin just wants a place where he can ride the trails again. With the San Benito County's Clear Creek Management Area temporarily closed to off-road vehicles, and with a dwindling number of areas where he can ride his motorcycle, the Salinas resident is one of a growing number of off-road enthusiasts who have taken the fight to the Bureau of Land Management. At the bureau's local planning meeting for off-highway vehicle recreation in Visalia Saturday, Tobin and about 30 fellow riders from all over the state lobbied a citizens' advisory council to keep their riding areas open." Dunes enforcement: Conscientious or overzealous
Canadians Mike and Erica Combs got involved in duning about three years ago, investing about $70,000 in a sand rail and other equipment, and have been hooked ever since. But now with the aggressive stance of law enforcement, the Combs are rethinking their 29 hour trip to the dunes each year. Read the full story here.
BLM's Bakersfield office plans travel management workshops "We're
asking the public to comment on the route inventory, to ensure it is an accurate
representation of all routes on the ground within the planning area." said Peter
DeWitt, BLM recreation planner. "Comments on specific routes are encouraged and
identification of anything missing is vital to getting a complete inventory for
the route designation process." Route
inventory maps will be available for the public to review at the meetings. After
a short presentation about the travel management process, the public will be
given time to study these maps and provide written comments. BLM staff will be
on hand to help interpret the maps. BLM also will accept written comments by
mail to allow interested parties more time to look over the inventory maps. All
written comments on the route inventory will need to be received by March 13 to
be incorporated into the comment database.
There will be 2 workshops, one in Lake Isabella - February 25, Lake Isabella
Moose Lodge, 6732 Lake Isabella Blvd.
And one in Taft - February 26, Taft Union High School, 701 7th St.
For further information on travel management within the Bakersfield Field Office and the public workshops, or the resource management planning process, contact DeWitt at (661) 391-6120 peter_dewitt@ca.blm.gov at Bakersfield Field Office, Bureau of Land Management, 3801 Pegasus Drive, Bakersfield, Calif. 93308.
One Year Ago.....
Yes one year ago, we were here. Take a look at the news from then and who was the QOTM by going here.
My thoughts....
We are already through the first month of the New Year, with a new President and a bleak economy. With all the bad news on the horizon and more and more people suffering hardship, I am thankful for all of you, being able to ride and participate in the sport we love. I know in the future the times may be tough and riding may be limited or restricted financially in some way. This could be for a lot of us, including track owners. Lets just hope we get through this quickly, recover and move forward to a bright new future. And remember all of you have a family here, and I am thankful for that. But hey, this is still a new day, and plenty of time to ride, so get on the quad and head out, it don't get better than that.!
